4 out of 5 stars Great Shoe!   October 23, 2008
This shoe is a very good shoe for a bigger runner. I purchased it as an update to the Trance 6 that I had been using.

Compared to the Trance 6, this shoe is a little more flexible with a spongier feeling insole. I don't think it is quite as support as the previous version, but the extra cushioning seems to be the trade-off.

The shoe looks better in person than it does in the picture as well.

I'd absolutely purchase this pair again.

4 out of 5 stars Very good long-distance ROAD shoe...   August 6, 2008

I bought these for long (6-15 miles) runs on asphalt or concrete, and for that they work wonderfully...very sturdy and comfortable. The reason I don't use them for softer surfaces like dirt or grass, or for shorter runs, and especially not for speedwork, is their weight---the same massive amount of cushioning needed for long runs on hard surfaces is totally unnecessary and counterproductive for other applications. A lighter, thinner-soled and more flexible shoe is much better in those situations.

Generally am very happy with all of my Brooks shoes and apparel. Brooks makes ONLY running gear, so you know they're going to be good since it's their sole bread and butter specialty. One of the things about Brooks I really like is the fit, I have medium arches and a narrow heel, and their shoes have always fit me like a glove, especially the ever-popular Adrenalines. The Trance is similar to the Adrens, though the heel is a little bit tight...I use a little athletic tape over my Achilles tendon to avoid any abrasions, but since this only happens on my left foot, it might have more to do with my own biomechanics than the shoe itself.

The reason I give this shoe 4 instead of 5 stars is because I think that in hindsight, I probably should've stayed with the slightly lighter and simpler Adrenaline. I'm have a medium-build at 5'9" and 165lbs, and am a very efficient midfoot striker; I think that this shoe would be best for a heavier and less efficient runner, especially a heel striker. That said, the Trance is especially good for mid- or fore-foot strikers because it seems to have a lower heel than other Brooks models...unless I'm deceived by outward appearance.

(Speaking of outward appearance, I'm not crazy about the blingy silver-and-lime color of this model; there is a red and silver version which I would've bought instead if it'd been available at that time.)

Oh well, you gotta try everything once. The Trance 7 is certainly a HUGE improvement over the last Trance model I tried, the NSX from several years ago.
